The city of Elizabeth is gearing up for its first gun surrender program in more than a decade, an event that could allow people from all around the county a chance to dispose of unwanted firearms.
While the specific criteria and procedure of gun surrender programs can vary somewhat, they typically allow anyone in possession of any sort of firearm to turn the weapon over to authorities anonymously, in return for cash. The guns are then destroyed.

Cranford, New Jersey – St. Michael’s School will conduct a series of Open House events as part of its upcoming Catholic Schools Week activities. Union County Sheriff’s Officers arriving at an Irving Avenue apartment in Elizabeth to conduct an arrest warrant found their man dangling out a window five stories about the ground.
Jerry Herbert, 36, of Elizabeth, was wanted for failing to appear in court last week.
Officers report that after Herbert was pulled to safety and taken into custody, he explained his escape plan.
“I would just drop and roll,” he said.

Elizabeth resident Pablo Timpson has become the first United States Marine veteran to attend Kean University under the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill. This bill, approved by Congress in 2008, allows an expansion of benefits in the G.I. Bill for military veterans serving after 9/11.
In August 2009, recipients became eligible for tuition support, which is based upon the highest in-state tuition charged by an educational institution.
